Legend has it that Mother Hubbard's cupboard was bare, but that was only to the untrained eye. If only she'd known what to do with the few basic staples in her paltry pantry, she wouldn't have made nursery rhyme history .

Hi there,

I'm Michelle and my superpower is making a lot of food out of a few basic ingredients. I have spent the greater part of my life feeding the ravenous beasts that are my sons (and a teenage daughter!).

Nothing quite prepares you for teenage boys and the bottomless pits that suddenly inhabit your home.

Terror often sets in as you watch these half boys/half men approach the kitchen and empty the fridge of its entire contents in one go.  And then, there's the mates. It's a well- known fact that these guys travel in packs, going from fridge to fridge foraging for leftovers. And my house was always full of them (leftovers and mates!)
Feeding teenagers
It's a phenomenon that can leave you dazed and confused if you aren't sufficiently prepared for it!

What you need though is a good collection of recipes that can be made from practical and economical ingredients.
I have shopped and cooked from the same list of staple ingredients for over 20 years. We have survived (and thrived) on an extreme budget at times. My pantry has contained the same ingredients for years now -- the basic staples (flour, rice, pasta). herbs and spices and sauces. My fridge and freezer staples have also been the same for years.

Nothing ever went to waste. And although our menu was rotational, it was never boring.

This page is all about feeding a family on a budget. It's about getting back to the basics of shopping and cooking. It's about keeping it simple and saving money. It's a testament to how I survived feeding teenage boys with a well-equipped kitchen and a rotation of cheap and practical recipes.

On this page I will share with you the rotation of our favourite recipes that kept everyone full and happy. Every recipe is made from a master list of very basic ingredients and over time you will learn how to keep your kitchen stocked for a constant rotation of food.

And you will teach the beasts to fend for themselves when they venture out into the world alone, as mine have now done.
Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today.
Teach a man to fish; and you will not have to listen to his incessant whining about how hungry he is.
